We understand that it can be really difficult to know what tiles to select, and sometimes, the choice can be overwhelming.  However, by opting for some of our best practices, you can create a stunning bathroom regardless of the size.

The key lies in ensuring you carefully planning and preparing for your project, which is why we’re going to explain some of our top tips for selecting and applying tiles in a bathroom in this article.

1. Use Light Colours

The colour that you choose for your tiles can really have a big effect especially if you’re renovating a small bathroom. By opting for a neutral tone tile, you can create an atmosphere that is relaxing, and create the illusion that there is more space than there really is.

2. Use Large Format Tiles

At Tile & Stone Gallery, we have hundreds of unique tiles that work well in your bathrooms, but we strongly recommend you use simple, large format tiles if you have a small bathroom because it offers two main benefits: cutting costs and helping your bathroom appear bigger. Naturally, as you would expect, using fewer tiles to cover a larger area will typically be cheaper, especially when compared to using small tiles with busy patterns. In addition, as with light coloured tiles, large format tiles can help create an infinity effect, which will help it feel spacious.

3. Remember the 10% Rule

It seems obvious – if you’re tiling your bathroom, you’re going to want to have the right amount of tiles. As a general rule of thumb, once you have measured your bathroom properly and determined how many tiles you need, we would recommend adding 10% of extra tiles to avoid running out. This is because, unfortunately, waste and breakage inevitably happen when tiling and you will want to be able to complete your tiling project.

4. Use Backer Boards

By applying a tile backer board, you can create a strong surface that can be easily tiled onto. Additionally, they can be used with any tile type, and most importantly for bathroom projects, they provide a completely waterproof surface that works well around showers and baths. We would suggest using BAL Boards or Marmox boards which can be discovered in our showrooms.

5. Use Water Resistant Adhesives & Grouts

As you would expect, if you’re tiling areas that are going to be subject to water, it is imperative that use a water resistant adhesive and grout. This will help seal your wall or wall tiles, protecting them and ensuring that water cannot seep underneath.

6. Consider Patterned Tiles

If you want to decorate your bathroom, patterned tiles are a great choice. However, in small bathrooms, they can often appear cluttered and overwhelming, so we would suggest using them sparingly. Instead, we would suggest using them to create a feature wall which is guaranteed to impress your guests. If you would like to add a patterned floor, then, of course, you can do this, but remember that it will give away the illusion of space you’re trying to create and may make it appear small.
