Tile Trends of 2018

As we approach the tail-end of 2018, it provides us with a fantastic opportunity to reflect back on the top tile trends that we noticed this year and ones that may live into 2019.

Best of all, if you’re looking to tile your home, you can style it with the most popular trends, so we hope you find some inspiration for your next tiling project!

1. Rectified Edge Ceramics

Firstly, what are rectified edges? Well, rectified tiles are porcelain or ceramic that have been designed to have a nearly-perfect, straight edge. As a result, they’re able to provide a very clean, symmetrical look that barely shows any grout lines (since they only allow for fine grout of 3mm and less).

Surprisingly, we’ve noticed a trend of people opting to use ceramic tiles, rather than porcelain ones when trying to achieve this look. Our Stratus range, pictured above, is a great example of how you can achieve this.

2. Decorative Small Format Tiles

This year, using small decorative tiles has become increasingly popular. By opting for decorative tiles and focusing on patterns, you can easily break up the monotony created by straight lines and solid surfaces. Great for easily adding character and style to any room. Our recommendation would be using a tile similar to Delamere as seen above.

3. Small Tiles in Bathrooms

Traditionally, small format tiles have been used in kitchens and large format tiles have been used in bathrooms (because they create an illusion that the room is bigger than it really is). However, this year, we’ve noticed a buck in the trend with more and more people opting to use small format tiles in their bathrooms.

With more people considering bathrooms to be a living space in their own right, it is unsurprising that people are trying to create their own style within these spaces. By placing an emphasis on texture, and using small tiles, you create a stylish room with contrasting surfaces. If you want to create this style, we would suggest using our Santiago range.

4. Combining Styles

Combining different styles has been a popular trend this year. For example, people now choose to use stone effect tiles on their walls, and wood effect tiles on their floors. Why? Well, firstly, not only do they offer a more affordable option than the actual thing, but they’re more practical. They require little maintenance and are generally more hard-wearing (compared to actual wood and stone).

In addition, they are incredibly versatile and complement any style. They work together to create an urban, rustic look by combining natural textures. We would recommend our Eris range and our Alto range for creating this contemporary look.

5. Rug Effect

What is the rug effect? Firstly, it doesn’t involve any woven material! Essentially, the rug effect is a floor tiling trend in which patterned tiles are surrounded with plain tiles, which creates a decorative block, that, incidentally, looks similar to a rug.  Want to create this look? Our Metis range is perfect.

So, that’s the most popular tile trends we noticed in 2018! If you still have questions, feel free to get in touch to your nearest Tile & Stone Showroom and talk to our staff who will be happy to help. They’ll be able to guide you through your next tiling project and point you in the right direction of anything you need.
